Hi Oleg,

the comment about ResponseContentEncoding  was guessing, but the info about 
DefaultConnectionReuseStrategy.keepAlive() not seeing the content-length header 
was fact. I had added logging there and clhs.length in the below code really 
was 0 and thus the strategy returned false:

if (canResponseHaveBody(response)) {
final Header[] clhs = response.getHeaders(HTTP.CONTENT_LEN);
// Do not reuse if not properly content-length delimited
if (clhs.length == 1) {

The problem vanished when not using compressed responses. I don't know why the 
content-length header isn't available in the strategy although it could be seen 
in the wire dump.
