After much wrangling, I was able to build using cc from SUNWspro [sun cc/sun developer studio cc?] and the Coolstack source package. Coolstack bundles up nearly all of the runtime dependencies, solving whatever mixing I had done trying to build from the "ground up." +1 for Coolstack! --Pete
