Illustrative patch (this is relative to the current SVN trunk - there has been
some tidying up as a side-effect of working on this e..g remove Op2.setRight --
mutating ops can cause problems; use .copy(,) )
The patch shows a possible solution. It is not tested enough to commit to the
main codeline.
