As a user and admin, I think the single biggest barrier to entry is the
installation process. As a senior application architect and developer, I've put
some thought into what I'd like to see, but the sign-up process to contribute
is kindof a pita, and I haven't finished it yet.

I agree that some import capability would be nice--and I also think this would
be a nice place for plugin capabilty, rather than an implementaiton. A good
reference implementation is always nice, of course.
Auth is and should be JAAS, and I think the documentation is really weak around
this. JAAS nicely supports OpenID as noted. A reference implementation would
also be nice. And this is the area I'd like to contribute, but this will have
to wait until I have time to complete the contributor signup process.
