Getting releases out is, as has been observed, a job no-one actually
wants. But without releases the community will die - no release = no new
users = no new devs = no no committers = no new releases.
It is true that to get people to do stuff they don't want to do you need
to provide some sort of motivator. However, in Open Source the
motivation has to come from within oneself since nobody has the power to
reward with anything other than a thank you (we are all equal).
A healthy community will always find someone steps forward to do the
job. Why? Because they have a *personal* reason for seeing the community
continue to grow.
What I find fascinating (and annoying) about this thread and related
threads here, is that someone has already stepped up to the plate.
Someone has a personal reason for doing the job, no why not let them do it?
Perhaps the problem is that somewhere along the line a title "Release
Manager" has been applied to the "post". Strip the title, focus on this
release, recognise the contributions being made and get on with it.
Let the meritocracy do its work, there is not a problem here.
