What do you mean by a fast maschine. Is a new apple mac book fast enough?
probably, but the toolchain i've been using runs on linux, and setting
it up on darwin could be hard.
the machine should be a really fast linux-capable x86 or x86_64,
something like a p4 >= 3GHz or an equivalent athlon. dual-cores are no
gain, since unfortunately the available theora encoders are
single-threaded. but then we can all have then warm fuzzy feeling that
the whole toolchain including the codec is open-source :)
the linux distribution does not matter (i can also set one up from
scratch if an empty harddisk is available), but it needs diskspace on
the order of 20GB and a c compiler plus build tools.
the outbound traffic would be limited to one stream that is then relayed
off another server (in case the university are concerned about bandwidth
usage)...
