BTW, shall we release a binary version at all?
yes, I think so.
Anything lowering the (rather high) entrance barrier is important -
not everyone is a knowledgeable user at the beginning but getting
an easy start without having to install another piece of software
could trigger interest.
The problem I see is that the user certainly expects to get a
completely usable product when downloading the binaries. With Lenya,
this is not the case - you just get a little showcase application,
but can't do any serious work with it. As soon as you want to
develop your own publication, you need the source version.
IMO we should create a roadmap to overcome this issue:
1. Release only the source version for the moment
2. Re-design our build process to allow deploying pubs+modules in the
binary version, i.e. separate the Lenya compilation process from the
pub/module deployment process
Thanks for clarifying - your explanation is convincing.
+1 to release a source version for 2.0 and the roadmap You proposed as
a build enhancement.
Maybe the description you just gave (to fully hand over the module
framework in all it's flexibility to the user) could serve as an
explanation why lenya does not ship a binary for 2.0 - on the download
page.
I wish you "en Guete"
Jürgen
