I've put an initial patch here:

It's still a work in progress, but it has test coverage. It uses the vmrun
command line tool and does not introduce any new dependencies. It adds a new
subprocess helper that logs stdout and stderr to LIBCLOUD_DEBUG. In the future
it can be expanded to connect to remote hosts via extra arguments to vmrun. I
plan to also add VirtualBox support using the same approach (via VBoxManage).
