I did not know that there is a *mayor* difference in the format. The German hyphenation patterns are converted as described at http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org/hyphenator.html . That page just says "remove all TeX macros and write a charset to the head". For German also Umlaut conversion "a -> รค etc. had to be done. If this is not right and more steps are needed someone should urgently update this site.
