Hi all,

Today, on the European Day of the Languages, the project OpenTaal (www.opentaal.org) has released a new version of its Dutch spell checking dictionary. This new version was again successfully certified by the Nederlandse Taalunie (Dutch Language Union, the institute that maintains the official Dutch spelling)

More than 50,000 words were added to the dictionary. Also, the Hunspell dictionary supports recognition of compound words. The big advantage of this is that much fewer correct words are rejected.

Previous versions of the OpenTaal dictionary are being used by millions of people. In first instance it is developed for use in open source software such as OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox, and Google Chrome. But because of its liberal license it is also available in, for example, Mac OSX and Opera.

The project OpenTaal is driven by Dutch and Belgian volunteers and receives help from professional linguists. It aims to develop free and open Dutch linguistic resources for use in open source projects. OpenTaal is also developing a Dutch thesaurus and grammar checking. The project is supported by the foundation Stichting OpenTaal.

Simon Brouwer.
