You're talking about permanent employees as opposed to people hired for
specific projects, but in the latter category I've had telecommuters off &
on for about 3 years now (at least one is on this list) and it can work very
well. Although I agree that nothing beats actually being there, the fact is
I've had good results working with people I never saw for months on end.

As regards technology, you can do a lot with web-based groupware such as
chat & whiteboards. We have those built in to the integrated project
platform we use for a lot of work.

and seriously also, it's a very different world allowing employees to
telework. you may find that larger service companies begin to do this
more often with freelancers as it cuts down on overheads and that may
change the way the employee market works eventually. I'm happy for
trusted people to work at home but as Duncan pointed out, there is a
definite need for regular personal contact that MSN can't yet provide.

but on a more serious note, i'd be more than happy to consider
telecommuting offers of up to 40 hours a week (providing I can get away
with working 10)

Yeah... I would be very nervous about letting an employee go like that
at the moment, give it 30 years or so though- you'll be able to work at
home once you've retired and the mean employers will pay you 2.00 an
hour, the equivalent of a penny sweet in future money ;)

Even a boss that trusted me - and there have been a few - would not sign
up for that. Maybe I'm atypical, but part of the service is to support
my sponsor in his/her interactions with other players (his/her boss,
other 'barons', the users, potential/actual customers....). And for
that you have to be able to attend in person at reasonable notice.

yes. how well you know them. Trust.
as a side note - who here could talk their boss into letting them
telecommute? say if you wanted to spend 2+ months in the bahamas? how
about if you could arrange handy tools - iChat, video conference, a
sorted CVS, decient laptop and internet connection?
curious

yes but we all know Spike that's the difference. It's a different kettle
of fish when your dealing with an unknown.
