has the server been maintained properly.
I.E is someone defragging it regularly, has the had drive performance and integrety been chcked lately if it's an old server cozz if the hard drive is failing you will have said problem, is there still plenty of space on the hard drive, has the memory been checked for corruption. etc etc.

If they are running SQL on the same server as everything else, this is somehting quite doable, despite whate everyone says, but you have to do it in a certain way so that performance is not compromised.
ideally you need a dual cpu server with a seperate disk for the SQL server to run from (not a seperate partition), and at least 1gb ram, I would probably suggest 2gb with CFMX and SQL.
If they are going to get a new server anyway I would suggest 4 drives in raid1, 1 set of mirrors for the OS/CFMX/websites (properly paritioned of course), and 1 set of mirrors for the SQL server.
this is not the BEST solution posisble, but I am presuming a lack of budget due to the fact they are using only 1 server to begin with, so this is the best solution on a budget.

Subject: [ cf-dev ] Coldfusion Performance

Guys,

I have a client who is having performance issues with a legacy system running on CF4.5 and SQL7  database.. My main bone of contention is that both are on the same box i.e. SQL and CF45 so I am assuming the SQL Server is gobbling as much RAM as it can get its greedy hands on so I have suggested restricting the amount of Memory SQL can use up via SQL Server Configuration Tool.

As I mentioned, this is an old system now (4 years), my first CF project so very rusty indeed with NO LOCKING of sessions (I know, hang me at dawn) but the system has been running OK for 4 years (only needs rebooting one or twice a day) but from yesterday (with no apparent changes to the system, so they assure me) they have to reboot every 10 mins. The intranet site is very database intensive running all CFQUERIES, no Stored Procs (give me a break it was my first project).

Has anyone had similar symptoms.

Also, they are in the process of building a CFMX version with JRUN and CFC’s and the whole shebang (not me this time as I left the employ of the agency that provides the service, or lack of it if they have had to come to me direct) and that server is running worse and I can only assume they have the DB on the same box again as they think its okay because its only serving one website.

Cheers in advance.
