This means that X is not coming up correctly.  You need to boot the system in 
single user mode and determine why the X server is not working.

There is a log in /var/log that will have the information on why it is not 
coming up.  My initial guess is that the video card you are using is different 
than the one in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Upon startup, when I get to the ume login screen my LCD display blinks about 
once every second. The terminal does not accept keyboard input when the screen 
is black.

It's kind of annoying when you're trying to enter a username and password to 
type one letter every second in sync with the blinking. Is there a fix for this?
