Or use image-writer to correctly discover your USB drive and write for you.
Be sure to unmount the drive if your distro automounts it.

# cd <directory with downloaded image-writer file>
# chmod a+x ./image-writer

Not /dev/sdb1, instead use /dev/sdb.
