Hmm, I added the following assertion for both test point 1 and 2:

    assert planetModel.pointOnSurface(testPoint.x, testPoint.y, testPoint.z) : 
"Test point is not on the ellipsoid surface";
{code}

This assertion passes in both cases.  And yet the point you get from your 
"alternate" way of constructing the second test point is quite different in x, 
y, and z.  The differences look too big to be mere precision errors.
