See SOLR-12028.  This issue refers to another one that was deleted for some 
reason -- SOLR-12016.  I can see all the history for that issue in my mail 
archive, but it's not on the Internet any more unless you want to delve into 
things like the web archive.

There is also an extensive discussion on the dev list, and a number of status 
messages from [~erickerickson] detailing the work he's doing on an ongoing 
basis.
