Karl, I still believe the user who recommended that MNG-5227 be emitted as a warning (not error) in 3.4 was onto something correct. It's clear people aren't getting any lead time to know that their POM has a problem and thus breaks when using 3.4. Making it a warning now and switching it to an error in 3.5 is more friendly to the upgrade path, I believe. I still hope you can reconsider the issue because it's not a nice thing to fail a build for the sake of fixing thing within 1 point release. At least for anyone who tries jumping 2 point releases, the Maven developers could say "we gave you the chance" but there is no chance at this moment.
