Just for information (not the topic of this thread, but related): other plugins that could be consolidated are:

 * compiler + javadoc
 * jar + source

The reason for consolidating compiler and javadoc in the same plugin is because their API are closely related in javax.tools. They share the same objects for specifying the source and the JAR dependencies. The objects which have been built for compiler can be used almost directly for javadoc. Merging the two plugin would be a significant simplification compared to two distinct plugins.

The reason for consolidating jar and source is because in a multi-module (in Java sense) project, the Java compiler compile all modules in one single call to javac. It is up to the JAR plugin to package a separate JAR file for each module. The same division must be done for the sources, which was provided to the compiler as one single set of sources (split in different directories for each module). Since the JAR plugin (the one which is currently under vote) handles each module separately for packaging the .class files, it would be a natural extension to also handle each module separately for packaging the .java files.

This is not the topic of current thread, which is about clean + install + deploy. I just mention that more consolidations may be proposed in the future.
