No difference ;)

I've noticed that if you're quick you can ctrl-C just before m2 kicks into 
action, but once you start seeing output in the console it's too late.

I'm not up to speed as to the m2 boot process, but could it be possible that 
something in one of the libraries used has changed, e.g. classworlds, etc?
