In M2 the pom transformation is handled by the release-plugin.
An alternative way would be to deprecate everything not specifically
needed to prepare/preform a release. Then create a minimal 2.0 version
of maven-release-plugin with everything previously deprecated removed.
That would be easier to maintain and still keep some backwards
compatibility.
