There seems to be some interest in this facility on maven-user. I'm
not sure, however, if this is heading towards an even more generic
usage, where you could grab the revision using maven-scm, without any
plugins. I'm not sure if the checks this plugin does (to ensure the
latest revision number) are desirable in that case. Any thoughts?
In any case, I've fixed up the snapshot repo and the plugin repo so
that you don't need to do any downloading/building/checking out other
than modify your pom to use this plugin. It even builds itself using
itself to version itself - well, actually it uses the remote
snapshot, but pretty close. Should it be sandboxed or is this going
to head into another area?
I've also noted that snapshots already have a buildNumber element in
the maven-metadata...-snapshots.xml that gets installed into the
local repository, but not into the deployment repository. I'm not
sure at this point where that is coming from.

(It pre-dates the mojo.codehaus.org website)
I've used it successfully on many projects.
