Got it working somewhat. Will check in this code built from a maven 2.1.0-M1.
A few major finds.
1) A maven lifecycle needs to be in a MOJO in Maven 2.x. Having the cbuild
lifecycle extension in a JAR pulled old plexus-utils jar file dependencies into
the parent container and java language exceptions insued.
2) Was still getting java language exceptions. Took a few days. This ended up
being the key http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MNG-3438. plexus-archiver pulled
in dependencies that are not compatible with maven 2.x..
