Hi Simon,
I added a "Tips, Tricks and Workarounds" category to github
discussions:

Feel free to add a post to it which helps with ibus problems.
Done.
It turns out, the default ubuntu installation assigns the emoji key to
<super> period.
3 workstations here, somehow had this assignment changed, or inherited
from some old user profile, to <control> period. (prob to make it work
with the Model-M keyboards around)
Apologees for the confusion caused, amended the discussion to reflect
the new insights.
The seemingly lockup of the netbeans gui is caused by the ibus
keyboard handling. When the emoji key is pressed. the only way to exit
the emoji handling is pressing the enter key. So ctrl-z does nothing
here, giving the illusion of a lockup.
I see. Good to hear that the distribution default doesn't cause
problems. I am no heavy emoji user and usually stick to the smiley, but
it would have been surprising to me if we wouldn't have noticed by now
that ctrl doesn't work on ubuntu :).
best regards,

Phew.
