Thanks for those links.  Interesting to see.  I think there's a couple
of other things in there that we might be able to get rid of now,
related to native binaries.  Will take another look.

Whether *we* can build binaries of old release branches isn't really
the issue.  We release sources.  We have tens of thousands of source
downloads for each release.  The json redirect is actually more for
checkout builds - we embed it in the released sources so it cannot be
affected by future link or file modifications.  With binary download
links we should give some consideration to how permanent any external
permalinks really are, and if necessary look at what steps we can put
in to ensure resilience of our source releases.  This is not the first
time there's been a potential for this link to be a concern.
