Option 4 won't work, as the way partitions can be specified in Pig and MR is
more expressive than what the URL supports. The URLs are designed to support
access to one partition at a time, but Pig and MR can indicate they want to
read from multiple partitions. Could you help me understand why this is useful?

Yes, people are using the REST API on top of HCat. It's called webhcat these
days rather than Templeton.
