Yes. It is a big change in the default behavior at the end or a release. I would be more comfortable changing this at the start of the next release.

Why is the VM transport a requirement?

It isn't a requirement for standalone mode. For embedded testing mode, we don't open any ports by default to avoid any potential conflicts.
