For information either this or a very similar case was discussed on the Forum at
http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=60475&p=267934

The only solution offered was that the text be split into several parts, each 
containing a safe number of equations.  As 4800 is not a "magic number", might 
the problem arise from some internal limit to wokspace or stack?
