What I understood so far is:
1. For some reason this (in RC5) only affects Mac OS X
2. It is NOT specific to High Sierra, since two people reported it in
Sierra too.
3. Apparently this didn't happen on a clean profile, but Jim managed to
reproduce it on a clean profile too. But Roberto explicitly reported
being able to open all kind of files, so it's unclear how reproducible
this is.

I've never seen the issue while using the various RCs (I never tried
with trunk builds). Still, I would advise to create another issue and
then conflate the two once we are sure this is the same problem.
