That is what I also thought of, since fodt is plain text it can easier
be compared in a version control system.

I did that with this file [1] and have no problems with editing/saving.

The fodt size is about twice as big as odt. However I see no tracked
changes, so maybe you have another version?

Can you try to install the filters on your Linux system? Which desktop
environment is Mint using?
