The idea sounds good. The problem is that we can not currently 100%-correct say whether current user is able to open the document ( ACL and so on in heterogeneous network can make life complex ), we have to try to open it to know it for sure. In those circumstances it would be problematic to detect whether other users would be able to edit the document.

Another possible minus, it could be confusing for some users, who do not know much about access rights.

Just a quick idea: let the preferred open mode also depend on the file's
access permission properties. If a file's permissions allow only the
current user write access there's no reason to open it read-only.
