O.K., I uninstalled everything on this weekend that smelled like Java,
however the behaviour of the Ubuntu-installed OOo did not change, i.e.
OOo could not get started, the error message is just:

Running soffice from the command line gives the following output on the
commandline:

         javaldx failed!

So, this happens while no "genuine" (from download.openoffice.org) OOo is installed, just the one that comes with Ubuntu? (Otherwise, it could be some unexpected interference between the two installations.)

What might give a clue is to run

  strace -f -o logfile .../soffice

(with "..." replaced with the path to soffice) and make the resulting logfile (which can be huge) available. Strictly speaking, this is probably the wrong forum for this problem, as it appears to be specific to the Ubuntu-specific OOo, but I might nonetheless find time to have a quick glance at the output, to see if something obvious goes wrong.
