You'll probably need a few hours to switch to using Osmium for file reading which already does XML and PBF file reading and writing for you. In the general case we should move away from everybody reading the files themselves. Developers should use libraries for that. That makes their software more robust and it is easier to support new formats. That being said I agree that we first should look at the download numbers and not switch off the XML format without a long warning period.
