Thank you, yes, if Overpass is faster, I would rather have Overpass. Yes, having the compatibility layer option is great!
Off-topic: I am happy to report that my experimental nominatim install and upload of data (200 megs - only San Fransisco) to Amazon EC2 worked great for me. I followed http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Nominatim/Installation word for word.
