I have seen other projects (I would say almost all) that use an online chat for communication. What I have seen here though, and I have not seen in other projects, is the wonderful thing that Rodric did forwarding the slack digest to the mailing list. My feeling is that this thing makes very easy to follow what is going on in the project without having to hook in slack frequently.
