Also noted is an intermittent (probably timing-related) problem in our
application (at least, not sure if it shows up stand-alone yet) where the
character bounds during caret calculations comes back as null. For now I have
put in defensive code so that it doesn't throw an exception, along with some
Console printouts so it can at least be detected that the situation came up.
Further investigation required.
