I'm not sure I understand your point. Current PR clearly describes the
meaning of "credentialVendingMechanism" and lists options available
out-of-the-box.

What does an enum achieve, that (current) runtime validation does not?

Conversely, an enum will require defining all possible vending mechanisms
in the Polaris API spec. This will prevent downstream projects from using
custom vending mechanisms.

I believe Polaris as a project currently promotes downstream
customizability.
