I think what this conversation proves is that the cartridge docs suck :-).

One thing we need to clearly document are the pros and cons of having fully
configured cartridges (including app code for example) to just having raw
OS instance cartridges. Second, we need to clearly document the protocol
that the cartridge agent participates in (sequence diagrams) so that a
person writing a new cartridge understands what happens when an instance is
brought up. Next we need to document the services available to cartridges
(e.g. logging and authn) and how they can access them.
