My understanding is that when Struts is re-organised this conflict goes away
to a large extent. One of the benefits of Struts becoming a TLP is that it
can have sub-projects and the plan is to separate the controller from the
tags. This means that they can be released separately and a release of the
controller won't be dependant on tag changes or bugs and vice versa.
Hopefully that will speed up the release cycle.

I don't agree that we should get rid of the tags altogether - some of them
are closely coupled with Struts and outside of Struts, have no use - the
<html:messages> tag for example. But I think having the tags as a
sub-project satifies both your position Michael, because you don't have to
take them and also satsifies Edgar's position (to a certain extent) becuase
they are still part of Struts.

Where Edgar might not be too happy is with tags being split into *core*
(i.e. still actively developed) and *legacy* (tags which can be replaced
with JSTL). I don't want to see these *legacy* tags deprecated - I have
systems happily using them and I see no value in changing those systems to
JSTL unless I have to change them for other reasons.

On the subject of custom tag behaviours such as the one proposed by Marcus
or Non HTML 4.01 attributes I think we can re-structure the tags to make it
easier to sub-class - in fact I put a patch in to do just that three years
ago but it never got picked up. Now that I'm in a position to do something
myself I'm hoping to re-visit this at some point. Whilst not embracing a
proposed change, it would at least facilitate people to easily create their
own custom versions.
