AFAIK, the mailing list strips attachments of MIME type 'application/octet-stream' and a bunch of other types - see <https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-1194>. Regrettably, it doesn't inform either the sender or the recipients that it's done so. - Julian
