This article doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Obviously the staff who left are very, very angry about issues that
have been going on for a while.
I don't believe for a second that a dispute over a sponsorship logo
on the web site alone would explain this.

Every time I hear (or read) someone explaining how "one of my companies is funding this free service", I grab my wallet and run away. "Monetizing" community-lead and -created services has been a thing since before the Internet. This is probably no different.
