+1 for CMake

CMake will generate the VisualStudio solutions, classic Makefiles, etc. for us. and of course out of source tree build. we just need to manage the CMakeLists.txt files

I'm not opposed to the change on principle.  Bonus points if we can make
this work with a relatively old version of CMake.
