While I prefer the coalesce() method, Daniel once said "reducing barrier steps
will eliminate all previously named steps. You can use a side-effect step
though". (I think we should update the doc at
http://tinkerpop.apache.org/docs/current/reference/#a-note-on-barrier-steps to
explicitly state that.)
So something like this should work:
