Actually, we can do without the MAVEN_OPTS.

I have made changes that allow me to locally build UIMA using Java 10. The 
changes to the unit test issues mentioned above allow the tests to work but do 
not remove the likely undesired behavior of Java 9+ to add line breaks where we 
(probably) do not wish them to be.
