I am not a great fan of Mission statement. Mission statements are usually put on* Layout: the page overall lacks focus. It's not clearl where one should look, at least beyond the green central rectangle. Hence, the bottom, including Mission Statement, etc., all compete with each other.
fancy english and is not what users look. They are usually delegated to the 'about us' page on common sites.
I think the mission statement is and has been the worst thing on the front page for the last four years. However, I seem to remember Louis arguing that it had to be there, for political reasons. I hope this is my long-term memory playing up.
