Welcome aboard! It's nice having you here; and we are delighted that
you are so wiling to share your insight and talents with us :-)
I'm curious, and would appreciate others to chime in, too. But first...
I fully recognize the desire and even need to improve the current
homepage. It does not satisfy, to my mind, the needs of users looking
for the product--114, 1.9, whatever. So, I applaud Daniel's suggestions
and look forward to seeing how things eventuate. Obviously, this is a
list filled with website experts, and I'd really love to hear their
professional opinions on the current and proposed versions.
Let's assume that we want to cater to users wanting the product. (We
didn't always want that, btw.) I think we can probably agree with
that; the Development project is pretty clearly for... developers, and
that's increasingly standard in OSS projects. And let's also assume
that we want to foregound the community and its vital importance to the
product. I think we can all agree these are the key points.
* So: What are the major deficiencies of the current page?
I'm not being wilfully obtuse, I mainly want to get clarifications here.
Each of us, I suspect, has a different "take" on them. If any of you
have already stated what you dislike, please, bear with the rest of us
and re-state them in a way that invites participation. There are a lot
of talented people on this list and it would be great to hear from them.
As well, I think that any group intent on redesigning the current page
might want to look at the archives of the last go-round of
website/homepage redesign.
The archives:

The list was created when we migrated to the current form of SourceCast,
in 2003 (actual migration was delayed until December of that year,
however). Some of the threads are beside the point, but others are more
useful; the subject lines are usually descriptive. What Kay and I had
done was bring in key members from other projects to participate in the
redesign. Cristian Driga led the re-working of the homepage, and we all
participated in the tabs, left navbar, and so on. I am mostly
responsible for the actual colors (which we all grant are not the most
important part of the game).
Thanks,
Louis
