I wouldn't touch javascript for any front-page content since javascript is so unpredictable and also un-compliant with browsers (as opposed to CSS).
By compliant I mean that other browsers like text browsers wont display the conentnt which the JS is depended on. On the other side, this design looks closer and closer to a PHP-Nuke site. Which well lack originality. I actually like the Mozilla, Gnome front pages specially for that originality. On the flip side we need to post the question if OpenOffice.org should present as a product on the homepage so we make it content-driven to presentation-driven like Mozilla did.
