Hi John,

As you might have noticed, we are in the midst of a redesign of the
homepage. Your requirement is a bit late, but we can indeed think about
including something like this. However, I'm not sure about the banner
format as you proposed. Initially I was, with the current design, thinking
about using the gull image for highlighting events... but due to lack of
time...

This idea is intended as 'quick win' for the current design.

Furthermore, I am not sure whether it does not conflict with our aim to
create a minimalist design. But if we can ensure that the ads are
minimalistic themselves -fit in with the minimalistic design-, then I
there is certainly some value in what you propose.

In the new design, it would still be useful to have some means of quickly responding to events with a banner or similar...

I hope the other designers will consider this idea though. Not sure what
Graham Lauder would think of it ;) and there is much truth in his argument
to keep things minimal. Alternatively we could also think about a separate
home for OOo enthousiasts. Normally, subgroups like the students should be
able to find the information you want to promote with the banner quickly
using the website, and adding more links to the main page makes this
harder.

Also one could think about including such highlights of features and
extensions at the why pages that aims at each separate user group.

The MarCons have been discussing a minor change to enhance the current
site. Adding a "banner ad" to the top of the page would add some variety
to the site, and would enable us to draw visitors' attention to some
current marketing 'hot topic'. See:

http://website.openoffice.org/tryouts/jpmcc/home

The "School? College?" banner ad should of course be an animated gif and
should be more "artistic" (but we have people who can do that). The key
thing is we could set it up quickly and change it easily. We would use it
to direct regular visitors to our "campaign of the month":

* Want to help us test version 3? click here
* Developer? click here to find out about developing for OOo
* OOoCon 2008 - click here to register now
* Bangla speaker? click here to help us finish our translation

Anything that is the 'hot topic' of the month.

This sample just required a few 'tweaks' to the site css.

Any thoughts?

Thanks - John
