Hi Maarten,

Sorry if this turns up twice, sent first via wrong email

Heh I was a bit like you at the beginning of the "Action Statements" saga :)
However John has convinced me. When it was first raised it seemed like
a "Banner ad" so I was ready to run screaming into the distance. However I
came round after thinking about it a bit.

Don't think of it as a "Banner ad", I think of it as "Link of the Day". It
would link to a page that deals with the hot topic of the day so that we
could leverage against that and turn a few 50:50 downloaders into 80:20.

For instance John was talking about a "School? College?" type of impact
sentence. That would leverage off the recent BECTA report saying that UK
schools should look at free alternatives to MSO 07. It would have to be
dynamic in that it could be easily and quickly changed and it would be linked
to a page at marketing.OOo that has content related directly to that issue.

What we are trying to leverage here, is another group in our demographic

Remember we identified the five groups

this sixth group is Issue Specific. In other words they have arrived here
because of a single issue. Of course there are lots of issues out there that
cause people to investigate OOo and most will be small ones that we don't
know about but every now and then there will be a high profile issue that
brings a lot of people this way, like the BECTA report.

We need to have a link there that says subliminally: "We feel your pain, let
us show you how we can fix that."

So it's like the "I want to learn more about OpenOffice.org"

but with a key word or phrase added. Like

"I want to learn more about OpenOffice.org in my School"

I'm brainstorming in text here, but hopefully you see what I mean.

Frankly I don't like Johns banner ad proposal because people almost
automatically ignore them. Banner ads are almost always linked to remote
sites and not part of the hosting page. Also that design of the front page
is due to go in any case.

Our "Hot Topic link" however should have as much significance as the others

IMO It should be done in the same style as the other links so there is no need
for redesign, or, at most, highlight it in some way, but I'm open to
suggestion

Cheers
