Well I will not be integrating java detection this coming weekend as
planned given our findings of yesterday. I COULD probably add more code
to actually test the bouncer link somehow but I am really worried about
performance degredation with so much overhead. AND, I'm not sure why the
jre inclusion was decided to be the default. So...before doing any more
work on this, I will contact the packaging folks and see what the
reasoning is here.
I know VERY little about how the bouncer site works (I'll ask Frank Mau
about this). If you've eve just looked at the generic landing page and
used the internal form, you'll see there are a number of combinations
for "products", "oses", and "langauges". Not all combinations work.
So...I will be back one day with more info.
Alternatively, we could mock up additional information in the download
drop down box stating that a JRE is included with the download -- this
is the default -- and informing the user to use the "Other packages and
languages" link if they don't want that.
I realize this is a rather complex issue and we don't want to discourage
downloads by making the whole process even more complex for our clients,
so...more later at some point.
thanks to all of you for your testing and patience.
