I've just tested with Win XP Pro/Firefox 3.0.5, javascript enabled,
removed saved password twice and followed procedure below.
When I click on "Log In" the boxes show my username and the password
field is full, but when clicking "Login", the page refreshes, but it
appears I'm not logged in (I still have "You are not logged in" in the
header).
If I click on any of the tabs I still see "You are not logged in".
However, when clicking on the person icon to the left of that text, I'm
taken to my Start page where I see "Logged in as <my username>".
If I click on another tab, (e.g. Home) I see "You are not logged in" again.
On another computer (also Win XP Pro/Fx 3.0.5) before removing, then
"remembering" again, my password, when clicking the login button I was
redirected to the main login page, which then showed that I was already
logged in. However if I clicked on any tab, I got the same message in
the Header ("You are not logged in").
After removing, then remembering my password, I get the same behaviour
as first described (the page doesn't redirect to the main login page).
If I go to a project page e.g. http://bizdev.openoffice.org/ I do see
"Logged in as..." in the header.

The problem/issue is that there isn't enough room in the expanding log
in box to have the labels 'username' and 'password' without making the
font sizes smaller and without making the expanding box overlap the
search section of the header or becoming too wide. The easiest
solution is to populate the username and password input boxes with
'username' and 'password' (respectively) to inform the user about
their function. However, as Drew's earlier email noted, this can stop
the browser's 'Remember Me' functionality.
I think I have come up with a solution that works - in Firefox, Chrome
and Opera. I tried it in IE6 and Safari, but their autofill functions
didn't work in either case.
Essentially, the latest solution works like this:
If the username and password text boxes are empty, JavaScript will
fill them in with 'username' and 'password', set the focus to the
username field and select all the text inside. If I fill it in with my
login details, I still get prompted about having my password
remembered (tested with Firefox, Chrome and Opera's wand feature).
Then if I log out and click log in again, the fields are filled in
with the remembered data. In this case, JavaScript will notice that
these fields are not empty. It won't fill them in with the strings
'username' and 'password', but will automatically set focus on the
Login button.
